Johan S. Ellefsen serves as Of Counsel for the Montoya Law, P.A. Johan concentrates his practice in the areas of litigation, corporate law, and immigration for entrepreneurs and corporate clients. He has represented clients from the U.S. and Bolivia in actions involving cross-border litigation and corporate law. He is knowledgeable in working within these two different legal and cultural systems.
Johan handles transactional and regulatory matters affecting corporation, including the aviation and aeronautics industries. His practice also includes air disasters, class actions and product liability cases. Johan's litigation experience extends to international claims brought in the United States that are governed by the Warsaw Convention or the Montreal Convention. He was part of a team of Montoya Law attorneys that investigated, negotiated and settled the claims of 47 passengers arising from the crash of a commercial passenger jet in Bolivia in 2008. Johan, the firm along with co-counsel handled the representation of plaintiffs in a nationwide class against Google, Inc. in connection with the use of the ReCaptcha in various websites.
Johan formerly served as clerk for Hon. William G. Young in the District Court for the District of Massachusetts, where he was involved in drafting the opinions on various types of federal litigation. As clerk, he was the principal contributor to a decision featured in the New York Times for its defense of the jury system and two decisions on consumer protection violations, which were chosen by the Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly among the most important decisions issued on 2012 and 2013 by the District Court.
Johan works and practices in the United States and in Bolivia and he is a member of the Bar in New York, the Bolivian Bar Association, and the Cochabamba Bar Association. He earned his law degree from the Universidad Mayor de San Simón in 2003 and his LL.M. degree from the Boston University School of Law in 2011, obtaining the American Law Outstanding Achievement Award.
